Book Direct with the Owner at Old Wentworth Gaol with Accommodation Gladstone in Scotia, for all your Attraction and travel needs.
The Old Wentworth Gaol took three years to build from 1879 and while it was not a place of comfort it was considered a slight step up from the usual lock-ups used before its opening. Times were definitely tough for the early settlers, and for those who fell on the wrong side of the law they were even tougher. The gaol closed in 1927, and it was a single storey brick building constructed from locally made clay bricks and featured bluestone trim brought in from Malmsbuy in Victoria. What makes the gaol so unique is that it was the first Australian designed gaol, designed by colonial architect James Barnett. After its closure the gaol was used for a variety of activities, including classrooms for the Wentworth Central School. Today it is a major tourist attraction for the town. Visitors can find out more about the history of the building with a self guided tour. The tour takes you inside the buildings and provides an insight into life as a prisoner in the late 1800s. There is a gift shop which once served as the gaolers residence, where you can purchase souvenirs, old wares and antiques. Coaches and group bookings welcome. The Old Wentworth Gaol is located in Beverley Street.
